Palega Beach Inn

I’ve spent two vacations here now, and both were lovely experiences. The service, rooms, and food were all good, and it felt like great value.

Patrick was warm and kind, and even helped us sort out a rental car. We came with two small children, who were absolutely thrilled with the place. Getting to the inn is the main drawback: the last 10 km are sandy, unpaved roads that really call for a 4x4. The hotel can arrange a paid pickup. I was told road paving is planned, though it may be over a year away. Once settled in, there’s a beach with parasols and reclining chairs, plus boat trips and hikes to the local village, among other possible activities. The staff made the stay feel personal. Lunch orders are taken in the morning, and dinner orders in the afternoon. Rooms have king beds, en suite bathrooms with rain showers, plenty of universal outlets, and lovely views of Lake Kivu. WiFi was good enough for 1080p streaming, around 10 Mbps both up and down.

The views and the place itself are beautiful, but that road is rough going. Take a 4x4, because the road really isn’t in good shape.
