Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel

The staff are helpful, and we love the hotel. The rooms are generous. The Pacific islands are remote and beautiful, rich in island culture, and the people have what they need in love, faith, and family. Keep that in mind when you book your “island escape.” Don’t expect internet, aircon, or fine dining. Please respect the people, culture, and environment. For a five-star experience, book a luxury holiday. For endless stars and beauty, come to the Pacific islands and be gentle.

The pool area has a nice view over the water and harbour, and the central location is convenient. Rooms are clean and have balconies, though the hotel needs renovation; some work is happening next door until the end of 2026. It’s not cheap, but Solomons isn’t a cheap country. Both restaurants serve great food, especially the Japanese one. Service is pleasant, if sometimes slow. There’s a bit of “island time” everywhere in the Solomons, so that seems standard 😉 Breakwater cafe is next door and has good coffee and food.

The included internet was very slow, and we assumed a hotel aimed at business travelers would offer a decent connection without hidden costs. We work globally and need stable internet for basic tasks like email; we’ve never faced charges like this elsewhere. We stayed twice at the Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel in Honiara, and although the rooms were generally fine, they felt overpriced, and the staff were friendly, we were extremely disappointed by the internet policy. We were charged over 2,000 SBD for “extra” usage, which we’re confident we didn’t use over three days. This has put us off returning. It’s a shame to lose customers over fair, transparent internet access.

The location is perfect, and the rooms are large, clean, comfortable, and have a sea view. Staff were very nice and helpful, and there are two nice restaurants and a pleasant pool. The bathroom needs some refurbishment, especially the shower. There’s no lift, and the wooden staircase has seen better days; it needs cleaning and repainting.
