Bernique Guest House

The location made it easy to get around, pretty much equidistant from everywhere, and I thought this was great value compared with other places on the island. Other accommodation I saw looked much the same but cost more and didn’t include breakfast. Wi-Fi was reliable and free. You can rent bikes there for 150 rupees a day, more than the stands by the marina, but these bikes were good quality. We could easily pass other people on the road thanks to the gears and brakes working well. On arrival we got fresh fruit juice from the welcoming staff. The rooms are basic, but very clean, with AC and a small fridge. Each has a little terrace with outdoor seating. Breakfast was great too: fresh fruit and juice, cake, cheese, and an egg fried or made as an omelette. I don’t get the bad reviews. Yes, it’s basic, but unless you’re staying at a resort hotel on the island, that’s what I think you’ll find.

The staff were really kind and keen to help, and even lent me a bike that took me to places I’d never imagined. The room was huge, very nice, and had everything I needed. The TV and Wi-Fi worked well, and it was always clean. Breakfast was excellent and homemade. I especially loved the cakes, donuts, and waffles they made each morning, and that banana cake was a 10/10, I won’t forget it :p Thanks again for being so kind! I stayed at Bernique from Sep 4 to Sep 9. The location is perfect, between the road to Grande Anse and the one to Source d’Argent.

The rooms are basic and fairly similar, I think. Mine was right behind reception, and it was cleaned every day. There’s no Wi-Fi access in the rooms at the moment, and no in-room safe. There is a safe on the premises, though, and Sylvania kept my valuables in it very safely, so I found Bernique Guest House trustworthy. Sylvania and Beryl, who run Bernique Guest House, welcomed me warmly and were very gracious and helpful. But the breakfasts were the best I’ve ever had at a hotel, and I’ll really miss them. They serve fresh, beautiful local food from 8 AM to 9 AM. The fruit plate and Sylvania’s homemade jams and preserves change every morning. She makes something different each day, like Belgian waffles, banana bread, or crepes, along with fresh homemade tropical juice. There might be a choice of fried egg or omelette. Even the coffee was smooth and tasted wonderful. *sigh*

Sylvania was a wonderful host, always smiling, helping with whatever we needed and sharing some great recommendations. She also made us an amazing breakfast every morning, a lovely way to start the day. The place feels peaceful, almost like being in the jungle, with birds to hear any time. It’s well placed close to everything, and though it looks humble, it’s always clean and tidy. Totally recommended!
