Elite Plaza Hotel Göteborg

Room 404 was small and didn’t have anything particularly good or terrible about it. The glasses had marks from the previous guest, the bath looked worn, and the plastic part of the shower screen seemed burnt. The toilet was old and had a different seat from the rest of the bathroom. The window wood was rotting, and a gust of wind blew the window open during the night. Tram noise made it very loud. The gym equipment was worn out, though the sauna was nice. Breakfast was standard. The hotel isn’t awful, but my one-night stay wasn’t good enough for me to return. It’s also very difficult for wheelchair users or people with prams, with so many stairs and bumps everywhere.

The hotel is in a beautiful old building, with quirky modern touches, and is very well located. The room, fixtures and furniture were high quality. Breakfast was served in an odd, unsuitable space for the number of people. The AC didn’t seem to work. There were two fans, but it was still hot, and the bathroom was boiling because of underfloor heating with no obvious way to turn it off. The breakfast staff and receptionist weren’t especially friendly, though the room service staff were very friendly.

The hotel and location are nice, but the rooms aren’t impressive and there seemed to be little effort to fix problems. My small room, number 315, smelled awful. Its window didn’t open to the outside, only above the restaurant and common area. On a relatively warm day in Sweden, with no AC, opening it just brought in more stale hot air. There were exposed wires sticking out of the bedside lamp, and the shower’s slide bar was lying horizontally instead of upright, so the handheld attachment couldn’t be used as a showerhead. I reported both issues to housekeeping. They said they’d write them up, but neither was fixed, and both problems remained in that dangerous, broken condition throughout my stay. It felt like a hotel with faded glory and no attention to detail. I can’t recommend it.

I stayed in a standard single room in mid-July. The layout was convenient, with a full-length mirror and blackout curtains, and it cooled off quickly once I switched on the fan, although it was a bit hot during the day. The hair dryer was somewhat dirty. Good location, friendly staff and a good breakfast.
