Masthuggsterassens Vandrarhem - Hostel

If your standards are close to zero and you're drunk, highly recommend. We stayed one night and won’t forget it. The parking was a very good price, only 80SEK for 24hours, but from there the adventure began: an abandoned, 80s-style labyrinth where you follow the urine smell to find the exit, and use the same rule for the elevator. Once you get to the upper street, you might think things will improve, but the hostel has a smell like it’s never been properly cleaned or aired out. Upstairs, dirty bedding was piled almost to the first floor. The toilets had several kinds of mold and rust, and some flushes didn’t work, so think about what you leave behind. Some showers were broken too, meaning you had to choose where to start washing so you wouldn’t have to walk the lovely corridors half wet to find another one. The corridors themselves had stains that looked like ancient history. The place claims you can get a partial sea view. Even with clean windows, you might see a little sea from 1-2 upper corner rooms, but that’s about it. And the beds, oh, you could get lupus just looking at them. A truly unforgettable experience!

The common areas and rooms were clean and well looked after, and everyone was hospitable. We made late arrangements, and the guy there stayed 30 minutes after hours to make sure we got a room. Then, when I couldn't find the hostel, he met us in the pouring rain and showed us the way. Very nice guy, younger, short brown hair, all black. I don't know his name, but he definitely deserves a raise. I'd stay again if I'm back in Göteborg.

A nice, cheap little hostel for backpackers, with a kitchen anyone can use for free and friendly staff. It’s around 15-20 minutes on foot to central Gothenburg, and 35-40 minutes to the central station.

The place didn’t match the pictures. The toilet smelled awful, and the small rooms smelled bad too. The windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. Linen and towels cost extra, the fold-out beds had hard mattresses, and the Wi-Fi was bad. Showers and toilets were in the corridor. Still, I suppose the nice little picture above the bed earned it a star. That’s irony.
