STF Kvikkjokk Fjällstation

Mosquitoes are a big problem around the station, and there aren’t any tent sites there. You have to find a place a few hundred metres north instead. The location itself is beautiful. STF Kvikkjokk Fjällstation is a typical medium-sized hut run by the Swedish Tourist Association, with rooms in different sizes, a restaurant, social area, and facilities for washing and drying clothes. There’s also a small shop with outdoor gear and some food. The staff may be less helpful than at other STF huts, though perhaps I was just unlucky.

It smells of mold and sewage, and this certainly doesn’t meet the usual STF standard for a “Fjällstation.” Update: thankfully, it seems renovations are planned.

There’s no usual lunch buffet here like at other stations, and after spending a day at the station I felt unwelcome. The place seems to make clear that campers aren’t wanted: signs say the bins, toilets, wifi, and laundry are only for guests staying in rooms. The toilets are locked outside restaurant hours, and campers can’t use the wifi, trash bin, or laundry, no matter how much they spend at the restaurant or overpriced shop. I understand that rules are rules, but it still didn’t feel good. On the plus side, tap water is available to everyone and isn’t locked away. A shower costs 70 sek for 30 minutes, with no soap or shampoo included.

Candles and green branches in vases made the mountain station feel wonderful. The breakfast was delicious, and the service was good.
