Smakrike Krog

A really nice venue with excellent food and good service. It’s one of the few restaurants in this part of Gotland open year-round, though in spring, autumn and winter it isn’t open every day. This classic holiday spot is worth the trip. In summer, there’s a nice beach a short walk behind the restaurant and hotel.

We’d planned to skip it because we were watching our budget, but nothing else was open, so we gave it a try. The place was beautiful inside and out, decorated in a cosy, creative way. The food was adventurous and excellent, with several kinds of homemade bread and beer from a local microbrewery. The staff were lovely and tried to help with our extra requests. Worth every krona.

The food was tasty and came quickly, but the way we were treated made lunch disappointing. We arrived with two young children and were sent to the back outside tables, which weren’t even set, while other guests ate inside. Another family and a couple in less smart clothes seemed to get the same treatment. It felt as if they preferred well-dressed customers, even at lunchtime, and the place wasn’t welcoming to families with small children. We had to ask twice for the bill and eventually paid at reception. It could have been a nice lunch if they’d made all paying guests feel welcome.

The tasting menu with wine pairing made for a delightful dinner with my partner. The food was amazing, the wines matched it beautifully, and the service was just as good. The setting was super charming too.
