Sälens Högfjällshotell

I rented apartment A1 in Cluwerbyen, right next to the hotel. The gas fireplace didn’t work, and my repeated requests to have it refilled were ignored because the janitor was busy. For this price I expected more. Parking is included, but the spot had a Waybler electric-car charger that was quite expensive.

We spent four days at the hotel and attended the New Year’s Eve dinner and celebration at Vinterträdgården. For 2400sek/person, the food was below par in both quality and quantity. The main singer revealed that the owners or managers had invited about half the attendees for free as friends or personal contacts. It felt like we were paying for those guests, and the dinner wasn’t worth the price. The band left at 23.15, so prerecorded music played for the rest of the night and the change of the year. Simply ridiculous. The hotel is advertised as having a spa, but there’s no pool. At first, we were put in a smaller room with two single beds and a worse view than what we’d booked. They called it “a free upgrade,” though it was actually a downgrade. After we complained, we eventually got the rooms we had originally reserved, and those were satisfactory. The reservations staff member lacked basic courtesy. If the managers don’t stop using the hotel to accommodate their friends and start prioritizing paying customers, we won’t visit Högis again.

The building is old, and its history adds to the experience. The staff are what make the hotel especially nice. There are good restaurants and private parking.

You might get lucky and see the northern lights. It’s also a great place to bring kids, with the ski slopes right there. There’s a small Ica Toppen nearby, and other larger ski areas are 10/20 min away.
