The hostel is right beside the train station, a big plus if you’re travelling without a car. There’s a pleasant patio and a playground in the backyard, an ICA Kvantum supermarket nearby, and a kitchen where you can store and prepare food. It mainly seems aimed at budget travellers and families with small children. We visited for one night in early July. The room for up to four cost about EUR 80, plus EUR 15 for breakfast for three. A local hotel, Best Western, was about EUR 95 including breakfast with a pre-season family special. For that small a difference, I thought the Vandarerhem was overpriced for the room quality and cleanliness. The room was tiny, with two bunk beds on each side. You need to bring duvet covers and pillowcases. The bedding provided was filthy, with lots of hair and yellow stains. The Vandarerhem was full, so around 40 people on our floor shared two toilets and one bathroom, which naturally got quite dirty. I know you should expect less cleanliness at a Vandarerhem than at a hotel, but I’d consider paying just a little more for a hotel.

The walls are so thin that you can hear people talking when you’re trying to sleep. The toilets were broken, too.

An inexpensive, centrally located hostel, with a supermarket close by.

Prices are good.

The kitchen was a real plus, spacious, clean, and usable. But the room was very small and cramped. You’d need a child who’s small enough to reach to make the bed, but old enough to actually do it. Maybe “you get what you pay for” applies in low season. In high season, it felt like paying for a four-star hotel and getting the lowest standard hostel you can get away with. Staff only checked people in and handed over keys, nothing else. If we go to ALV again, which we haven’t decided, we’ll avoid staying in Vimmerby.
