Vimmerby Camping

The apartments have thin walls and are right beside the restaurant. Our room was next to a large fridge at the back, and we heard it ALL NIGHT LONG. Restaurant events sometimes have live music, but there’s no information about when they happen or how long they last. We could hear bottles being thrown into the bin and kitchen staff talking. There were stains on the sofa, no cleaning supplies, and just one vacuum for all the apartments. None of that was explained in the apartment. Reception said there should be information there, but I checked and couldn’t find any. Our seven-bed apartment didn’t have enough chairs or hangers, and there wasn’t enough toilet paper. When we asked for more, they wanted us to pay at reception. There are no charging outlets by the beds or in the bedroom, only an outlet for the bedside lamp under the bed. The living room has one big light and no small lamps. There was a sewage-like smell every few hours during the day, which neighbours had also complained about. The staff were horrible and passive-aggressive toward everyone. The restaurant seemed like a joke, understaffed with young staff. We saw families wait almost an hour for food, with several complaints and mix-ups. There’s no air conditioning. One family in a cottage said it was boiling hot, and staff were rude, telling them they could leave but still had to pay at reception. Do not stay here. This was one of the worst places I’ve been.

The upper service station has good showers, each in its own booth, though one broken hose kept twisting and cutting off the water. Both service stations have a stove, oven, and microwave. The lower camp has five dishwashing sinks, the upper has six. During high season the toilets weren’t cleaned often enough, and by 10 p.m. there was no hot water left for washing dishes. An energy-efficient dishwasher is top of my wish list. The upper pitches are too small for a car and caravan, just 5x8 meters, and you need to leave four meters to each neighbor. Camping is cheap. There’s a small, fully automated shop open around the clock, but paying requires an app that asked for Swedish BankID. The nearest shop, Tempo, is 2-3 km away in Vimmerby. The site is a bit out of the way, but there’s a nice lake for swimming and pleasant walks through the Swedish countryside.

Most of the people staying here seemed to be families with young kids visiting Astrid Lindgren‘s World. The setting by a pretty lake with a small beach is lovely, the facilities are modern and quite good, and prices are absolutely okay. Staff were very friendly, and the restaurant was surprisingly good. Try the Pizza Vegetariana.

We stayed in a tent, and the beach was really nice. Of the four campsites I visited this summer, this was the most beautiful after kneppy. There are activities for kids, and the kitchen had enough supplies, including a refrigerator, water heater, and coffee machine. Thanks for everything.
