Chinatown is a great location, with three MRT stations nearby and several hawker centres serving good, cheap food, including a couple with Michelin stars. But I wouldn’t stay here again. During my ten days, I never got a good night’s sleep because of the street noise, and I couldn’t relax in the room with the constant recording downstairs. The stall directly below the front window played very loud music and recorded talking all day until about 9pm. It ran for about two minutes, then started again, over and over. By the end of my stay I was ready to destroy the speaker. Smith Street is closed to traffic during the day, but between about 1am and 3am delivery trucks made a lot of noise, apparently delivering durien through what sounded like a metal chute. There was crashing and banging, and workers shouted to each other without considering anyone trying to sleep. The room itself was clean enough, and weekly housekeeping was fine with me. My issue was the lack of hooks for clothes and wet towels. The wardrobe and hangers were useful, but I wouldn’t put a wet towel in a cupboard. In the bathroom there was nowhere for clothes either, the floor got wet, and the towel rail was tiny. The cleaner splashed water over the basin without drying it, so I couldn’t even put clothes there.

The rooms were clean, and communication was good, but only through WhatsApp. The hotel’s advertising for rooms and facilities was extremely misleading, and you don’t get what you might think you’re booking. The frontage shown was actually the cafe up the road, which made the hotel hard to find, especially late at night. There were no hooks for clothes while showering or to hang wet towels. The TV only works if you use your own app. Check the facilities carefully. The position is good, but it wasn’t cheap for what you got. Would I stay again? Probably not if there were another hotel in the same area.

The worst part was how management handled the end of my stay. They offered to move me once the current guest left, but the room still hadn't been cleaned, then asked me to stay another night. Leroy & Jerrick also refused to refund the 7+ days I had left. I came to Singapore on business hoping for a straightforward stay, but it became impossible and I had to leave. There were cockroaches from the first day, and they weren't cleaned up outside until four days later. The pedestrian street was noisy all day, I had to haul my luggage up two flights of stairs, and there was no privacy. I could hear roommates awake late at night and early in the morning. On the last two nights I couldn't sleep because I was itching all night, whether the bedding was very cheap or there were bed bugs. It felt disgusting and unhygienic. I never usually leave reviews, but save yourself and don't stay here. It's overpriced, and management shirks responsibility.

The location makes it easy to get everywhere, and the staff are very nice. But they seemed surprised when we told them our room had no glass in the windows, just wooden louvers opening onto the alley. Apparently they didn't know what the rooms were actually like. Cooking smells from nearby restaurant exhaust fans filled the room all day, mostly bacon and eggs. The room was as nice as you can make a tiny space, but if you don't want an alley-facing, open-air setup, ask which room you're getting before you book.

Smith Street in Chinatown has a lively mix of history, local culture, and modern city energy. Red lanterns and busy shops bring lots of color, and the neighborhood still has a strong sense of tradition. It's a lovely little corner to wander around, take photos, find food, or just enjoy the atmosphere. And with a name like Smith Street, it feels like the place was made for me. That alone makes it memorable.
