Hotel Mirna

The Wi-Fi worked okay, and breakfast was average. The room itself was basic with a poor view, and the small safe couldn’t fit something like a tablet. You also can’t use the fridge unless you buy the very overpriced items in it. For a four-star hotel, the towels were disappointingly thin, there was no complimentary water or coffee-making equipment, and the only toiletries were a combined hand wash and shampoo. The shower head didn’t sit properly in its holder, so water went everywhere. Pool towels cost €4 unless you bring your own, and the sauna costs €15. This was the worst four-star hotel I’ve stayed in anywhere.

We had a lovely autumn holiday in Portorož and nearby, and might return to the area, though we’ll probably choose another hotel. The staff were mostly nice and efficient, and the room was very clean and okay for a few nights, if a bit small for two adults and two children. The bathroom could have had nicer tiles and a bigger shower, but those were minor details. Our balcony had no view, and there was some outside noise from what seemed to be air conditioning or ventilation at the neighbouring hotel. Food was decent for three nights but repetitive, especially breakfast. The wellness facilities were huge and not too crowded, and the water was lovely and salty. It was nice having both SeaSpa and Therme, even though the attractions were mixed: some water jets and bubblers didn’t work or ran on an odd schedule, and there wasn’t much for kids. I understand it’s a spa, not an aquapark. Entry was confusing too. One card was enough for all four of us at SeaSpa, so we left the other cards behind, but everyone, including the kids, needed their own card at Therme. That meant a seven-minute walk back to the room and then back again. Some of the smaller things made the stay feel cheap for a four-star wellness hotel. We arrived at 4:30 pm, not especially late, but the hotel was closed and had only a phone number. They told us to check in at another connected hotel and wouldn’t open the parking so we could leave the car first. Food that ran out at breakfast or dinner wasn’t always replenished, which was especially odd when we’d been assigned the second dinner seating. For all three days, the only dinner side dish was fried potatoes. Bathrobes were an extra charge, old and uncomfortable, and there weren’t any for children. There was no bar open in our hotel or the neighbouring one. I didn’t go further through the maze to look elsewhere, and the room booklet said our own hotel bar should be open, but it never was. The room, dinner and pool access all had their good points, but the stay came with too many frustrations. I’d describe it as technically a four-star hotel, with enough penny-pinching details to bring down the experience.

We enjoyed our stay a lot, and felt it was good value for the price. The room was huge and well equipped, the staff kind and polite, and there were nice beach options, night programmes and daytime programmes almost every day. We could also use the pools and wellness facilities at other hotels. One thing bothered us: even though we ordered drinks with dinner, we couldn’t get a glass of tap water because they serve only mineral water.

The pools, wellness, breakfast and dinner are all great. Every time we come here, we’re pleasantly surprised. Simply excellent.
