Youth Hostel Proteus Postojna

There’s a very sociable feel among the guests, with lots of conversation in the kitchen and common rooms. We stayed one night in a room with lovely furniture, and it was very clean. The shared bathrooms are at the end of the corridor. The shower changing area didn’t feel very private, as it’s right at that corridor end with the toilets and showers.

It’s a good value hostel, with comfortable three-bed rooms and several shared areas where you can prepare and eat food. The atmosphere is nice, and it sits in an attractive, shady park planted as an arboretum for the hotel that stood here in the 19th century. There’s no lift, so it’s not a good fit for people with limited mobility or gigantic suitcases.

A great place, though we ended up sleeping on beds made from pallets.

We booked on the day and were surprised to get a room for three all to ourselves, even though there were only two of us. The price was very reasonable, and the staff were flexible when we asked to add another night. Everyone was warm and welcoming, and the place was one of the cleanest hostels I’ve stayed in. We were there over a holiday and a school day. It felt a little strange seeing the kids, mostly teenagers, around, but people were respectful of one another. The location is great for the caves and not too far from the bus station in the centre. I’d definitely stay again.
