Matija Thermal Spa Resort Ptuj

I came back to Terme Ptuj after almost 20 years. I grew up in the region and used to go there as a child, so I was disappointed by how poor the hygiene was. I didn’t mind that it hadn’t been modernized, but particles were floating in the hot tub, the support rods wobbled, rust was everywhere, and the shower heads didn’t work properly. The sauna area was the biggest letdown. Indoor saunas require swimsuits, which goes against basic sauna practice, while nudity is allowed only in the outdoor saunas. There’s nowhere to relax. You can hear teenagers screeching from the outdoor pools by the outdoor sauna, and kids from swimming lessons, held both before noon and in the afternoon, from the indoor saunas. They provided no sheets or cups for drinking water. The saunas were overcrowded, and we couldn’t even try the Turkish one. Worst of all, the outdoor sauna had shocking amounts of mold, growing on windows and in the corners in thick, nasty layers, along with black, rotting wood. We left. I don’t recommend it.

We’re visiting from New Zealand and have been to a lot of spa pools, but this day trip was the most disappointing. It was very hot and crowded on 12.08.2025. The place was quite dirty, babies in nappies were in the adult pools even though there are plenty of children’s pool areas, and nobody was controlling kids jumping into every pool.

My whole family had a great time here. There are loads of fun slides, though the two newest ones were still closed when I wrote this. It’s also less crowded than some of Slovenia’s other water parks.

For two adults and two kids aged 5 & 10, four hours cost 60+€. That’s a terrible price for what you get. The indoor pool facilities are poorly maintained and could be life threatening. Management seems completely disconnected from the business, even though a little effort would make a difference. We won’t be back any time soon.
