Coal Miners Cabins

Meeting kind people from all over the world and having such warm, helpful staff made Coal Miners’ Cabin especially memorable. The accommodation was comfortable and well maintained, the services were organized, and the food was consistently very good. My fiancée surprised me with this trip, and sharing it with her made it even more meaningful. It was the most beautiful vacation I’ve had and a perfect way to celebrate my 40th birthday. I’d happily recommend Coal Miners’ Cabin and hope to return for more adventures in Svalbard.

Breakfast was a highlight, with salmon, cold cuts, fruit, juice, lots of breads, and especially the scrambled eggs and bacon if you get there early. Dinner is buffet style with one main and two sides, and the menu is posted at reception. The French staff member who helped me call the activity organiser to book a northern lights tour deserves a special thank you. I saw amazing lights that night. I stayed four nights in October 2025 and found the staff excellent and helpful with questions. The bathroom and kitchen were clean. During my Svalbard visit, the tap water was not drinkable, but filtered water was available at reception or bottled water could be bought at the supermarket for about 60kr per 5L. I was in Cabin 1, where there was no oven glove. On the second floor there were three bathrooms, and the one at the end of the corridor had no hairdryer. CMC is a great guesthouse and I’d return on my next trip. It is a bit remote, about a 30 to 40 minute walk to the market.

Town is a bit of a walk away, but I found it easy and pleasant, and if you walk quietly you may see reindeer and Arctic foxes. The rooms were clean and warm, with comfortable beds. Breakfast was good, the dinner portions were generous, and the place lived up to what I expected.

The bar has a nice vibe and is a good place to meet interesting people. The hotel is a little out on the edge, but it’s an easy summer walk to the village centre. Breakfast was amazing, especially the smoked salmon, which I lived on.
