Villa Kunerad

This small, family-run place is quiet and good value for the money, though it isn’t luxurious. Veronica helped us with check-in and check-out, and the hotel kindly let us check in early at 9.30am for free. That was an amazing, thoughtful gesture. The Penzion is close to railway and bus stops, supermarkets, and the Hbrienok funicular, with plenty of walking trails starting nearby.

We stayed with our 2 kids, aged 1 and 2 years old, over New Year and had a wonderful time. Villa Kunerad felt warm and cosy, really like home, and was extremely good for a family with kids. There’s a play area with lots of toys, and the room has a mini kitchen with everything needed: a fridge, microwave, electric stove, and dishes. Breakfasts were good too. I’d definitely come back.

A nice, affordable hotel close to restaurants and a grocery store. There’s free parking outside, though finding the way in by car was a bit difficult. Nearby hiking trails are reachable by car, and the train up the mountain is just a 2-minute walk from the hotel.

The building is nice, with a garden, and there’s a stream nearby. Kids can play outside, and check-in is contactless. The location is good, close to the heart of Stary Smokovec. But there were a lot of problems, and I wouldn’t stay here again as things stand. We weren’t given any information at check-in. A girl on her own handed us the keys and that was it. She seemed to be the only employee on site, handling everything, including replying to emails and calls. There’s no reception or emergency contact. It took us 20 minutes to find the place by car. The street signs are very small and only visible from one direction. We saw the property but couldn’t find the entrance by car, so we called them twice. In winter, icy roads could make this a problem. I think we got the smallest and most problematic room, even though I told them several times that it was our honeymoon. The "kitchen" was so cramped you couldn’t move around, and you had to squat just to put trash in the bin. The fridge was small and very noisy. The mattress was very hard and our backs hurt. The plumbing was noisy too. Whenever we turned on the water, a gurgling sound came from the sinkhole for 2-3 mins. There was no daily cleaning, and they left us 1 toilet paper roll for our 3 night stay. We didn’t know who to ask for more. There was no way to control the heating. Apparently it’s floor heating and runs 24/7. The room got so hot that we slept with the windows open every night, even with 3C outside. The walls were thin enough that we could hear everything in the next rooms and corridor. Some people were talking loudly even at 3 am. The Wi-Fi showed maximum signal, but there was no Internet, not even enough to load a Google search. And they don’t serve earl grey tea at breakfast :( The villa could be much better if someone in management or ownership cared about it and did regular maintenance. I saw some of these facility issues mentioned in 2 yr old reviews.
