Hôtel Le Sokhamon

The ocean view is very good.

The rooms were spotless, and the shared spaces had superb African architecture and interior design. Ibrahim was friendly and really helpful. We’d stay again.

We were there just before the “covidius-18-period” began and celebrated New Year’s Eve at the hotel. It was a relaxed visit with few guests, so things felt very peaceful. The hotel has an arty vibe, with art on the walls and in the corridors. There are roomy spots inside and out to hang out or have lunch and dinner, plus a piano for guests who play. We had a room on the 3floor with a great sea view. At night we could see and hear the fireworks along the coast, pulsing and echoing. The pool was clean, the food was good, and the weather was agréable. The staff were funny and friendly, with the level of service you’d expect. It’s practical for getting around, about a 10 minute walk to the nearest food market and the historical center, with its shops and old malls. One suggestion: the outside of the building could use another coat of paint. Watch out for people following you around the market and asking for deals. Some wait for you on the walk from the Sokhamon to the nearest ATM in central Dakar. One of the guys looks a lot like “Snoop Doggy Dog” (see the second last picture). They say they need money so their niece’s children can eat.

The sunset and the view are the big draw here. Service didn't quite live up to them, though: the waiters could be more welcoming, and at times the place felt a little cold. The menu also has very little variety. Catching the sunset is still worth it.
