Yougo welcomed us so warmly and showed us around the hotel he’s getting started again. It’s lovely, right by the water in the heart of the Saloum. We’d come with friends for a meal at a dibiterie, and the wood-fire roasted mutton was a real treat.

Finding the hostel was a struggle: it’s nowhere near the listed address, and there’s no local number to call. The building seems solidly built, but it’s in terrible shape, with things falling apart everywhere. Our stay came with one problem after another: no hot water, toilet paper, soap, or top sheet, plus a blocked sink, broken door handle, and dirty pool with the water below the filters. The service was deplorable.
