Beachfront Casa Maya resort

René clearly takes pride in the hotel, and he was friendly, thoughtful, and keen to make sure guests had a good stay. The rooms were spotless, and the whole place felt cared for. It was calm and welcoming, so I felt relaxed and looked after as soon as I arrived. Truly an 11/10 stay, I’d come back in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone after comfort and good service. ✨

We stayed at Hotel Casa Maya from November 16-22. The beach views were lovely and the price seemed fair, but the stay was disappointing, especially since breakfast was meant to be included. We booked for three adults and a 15-year-old, listed all four guests, and were charged an extra $90 “guest fee.” Still, the hotel wouldn’t let my nephew have the included breakfast. Staff argued with us instead of helping, so we avoided breakfast for the rest of the week. On the one morning we ate there, even milk for the included coffee cost extra. There were cleanliness and safety problems too. One sheet had a visible stain when we arrived. On the first night, the doorknob had come out of place and we were stuck in the room for about 20 minutes before staff forced the door open. The key kept catching from outside, and at one point an unidentified person carrying a visible gun came to help. That felt unsafe. Afterward the atmosphere felt uncomfortable. On our last day, several staff members were gathered near the beach, apparently for a meeting. They looked at us and then turned away without saying hello, which felt awkward and unwelcoming. Keep in mind that Rutas de las Flores and Lago Coatepeque are about a two-hour drive each way. If those are on your itinerary, I’d book different hotels for those nights to be closer. Between the charges, stained sheet, safety concerns, and poor service, this wasn’t the stay we wanted. I would not stay here again.

Traveling solo outside the United States for the first time, I couldn’t have picked a better place than Casa Maya. The staff were warm and genuinely good people, the rooms looked straight out of a magazine, and the setting felt surreal. They also arranged my airport ride and have awesome rental cars. My only regret is not staying longer. I can’t recommend this place enough.

It’s right on the beach, which is a nice location, but getting down there means picking your way over large rocks. Clearing a path would fix that. The service really needs work. You have to go find staff yourself to order food or drinks, and after serving you, they disappear without checking back. This place could become a fine establishment, but the customer service is below par as it’s run now. I wouldn’t recommend it in its current state.
