The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the grounds, restaurant, common area, and beach access were all outstanding. The infinity pool looks out over a palm tree and the beach and ocean. The black volcanic sand isn’t ideal for sunbathing, but it’s a lovely stretch with good waves and surfing just steps away. The water was crystal clear and in the 80s in February. There are steep steps down to the beach, so keep that in mind if mobility is an issue. We spent one night in the penthouse, which was stunning, with a great view, hammock, outdoor tub, and lots of full-height sliding windows. Then we stayed a night in a regular garden-view room. It was nicely furnished with a beautiful bathroom, though the tiny garden means it effectively looks onto the parking lot. If you can afford a night in the penthouse, I’d recommend it. There’s also a room facing the sea, but it has no balcony, standard-size windows that don’t appear to open, and I’m not sure it’s worth the extra price over the garden rooms. This place is a gem, and I hope we can visit again.

The location is great, but for the price I’d choose another place in El Zonte. The rooms are spacious and nice, yet noise carried in from people talking in the restaurant and walking past. I asked about moving somewhere quieter and was told they’d get back to me, but they never did. I also asked about the spa’s hammam service and was told they’d message me on WhatsApp. I had to follow up myself. They then described it as a massage and hammam scrub, so I booked. The price list showed $70, but I was charged $150 because they counted those as two services. Reception apologized for the confusion when I raised it, but offered nothing. I’m fine paying for what I receive, but I didn’t like being given a second service without being told its price.

The pool is gorgeous, with an incredible ocean view. I could have stayed there all day, relaxing and watching the sunset. The hotel felt clean, comfortable, and peaceful. The staff were so friendly and always ready to help, and made me feel welcome from the beginning. I had an amazing stay, would definitely recommend it for great service and a beautiful spot by the sea. Can’t wait to come back.

We came to Garten in El Zonte hoping for a relaxed dinner, but the service made the whole visit frustrating. Our group asked for separate checks, and the waitstaff refused, claiming the system would crash if they made more than five tickets. Another employee later confirmed that wasn’t true. One person in our group was even told the staff were angry we’d asked to split the bill. The attitude felt annoyed and unhelpful all night. Several of us wanted to pay with Bitcoin, which El Zonte is known for, but the staff made that feel like a nuisance too. The food was about a 6/10, not terrible, but not worth the price. Drinks were acceptable, though they didn’t make up for the poor service. There are plenty of other restaurants in El Zonte with welcoming staff. Between the excuses, attitude, and food that doesn’t justify the cost, I wouldn’t recommend spending time or money here.

The view and atmosphere were beautiful, and they’re the only reason this gets one star. Everything else was a mess. Service was painfully slow and insulting. The servers were curt, didn’t try to help, and didn’t speak any English, which made even simple requests difficult. Drinks tasted like premium flavored water, with barely any alcohol in the cocktails. Then the food took over an hour. Some people in our group left because their orders never came. The dishes that did arrive were cold. The texture made me think the meal could have been good, but the delay ruined it. The steak even had ice on it. It was so cold I couldn’t chew it, like a frozen hockey puck, and by that point in the evening it was almost funny. We’d arranged separate checks at the start, but when we asked for the bill, they said splitting it would “crash the system.” Save your money and take a photo of the view from the street. If you want decent food, attentive service, or a proper drink, avoid this place.
