Midtown Motel Sxm

The hotel sits in a local neighborhood just past the touristy boardwalk, with little grocery stores a block away and the sandy beach about 50 meters from the door. Our family of four had two basic areas, a living, dining, and kitchen space plus a sleeping area and bathroom behind a curtain. The kitchenette worked for us, with propane burners, enough dinnerware, and a good-sized fridge. Room service was excellent, the car rental arrangements went perfectly, and the staff were friendly. Five stars because it was exactly what it said it was.

The beach is just across the street, and the hotel is on the quieter side of the bay. It was easy to get a peaceful day by the water, and beach towels were provided. In late February, this area was much less busy than the packed French side. The boardwalk and its dining spots are a short walk away. Late-night choices were limited, though the ones open late were closest to the hotel. There's a market nearby, breakfast within about a 10-minute walk, and a vending machine with drinks and snacks. For budget accommodation, it met my expectations: clean, quiet, comfortable, and easy, with friendly staff. The room, bed and linens, mattress, air conditioning, and bathroom fixtures were clean and worked fine. The door had a deadbolt and latch, and the windows kept out the traffic and construction noise across the street while giving us a lovely ocean view. The room was quite dated and worn, despite being clean. There were no table lamps, overhead fan, or toiletries beyond a bar of soap, and no cups or glasses. It did have a mini fridge and American plugs. Along with the bed, there were two bedside tables, a desk, chair, and closet with hangers. The windows and curtains in our king room opened all the way, but without screens we kept them shut at night to keep mosquitoes out.

I needed somewhere for an early flight, and this was a good, fairly priced option. The room was basic and the building was nice and quiet. The staff were super friendly, and there are some good restaurants close by.

Our king room had an ocean view and the Wi-Fi worked flawlessly. It's a no-frills motel, just as advertised, with a clean, spacious, air-conditioned room and private bathroom. The boardwalk and downtown Phillipsburg are a short walk away. Great Bay Market is two blocks up Front Street for groceries, and taxis are usually waiting a few blocks the other way, toward the center of town. A good deal if you're spending some time here.
