We spent two nights here, and the place felt magical. Dinner by the campfire, breakfast on the terrace, and lovely walks around the area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are historic, and the bed was comfortable for anyone under 2m tall. My one suggestion would be to get a proper coffee machine instead of those instant coffee packets.
This historic place in the middle of a wildlife park was worth all the planning it took to get there. The house is beautifully decorated, and the service felt luxurious, with breakfast outside overlooking the park and dinner by the fire. We explored the trails safely by mountain bike with a guide and learned about the park’s wildlife. There were several hiking trails too, which helped us work up an appetite for the next beautifully prepared meal. Glad we booked two nights!
The one real disappointment was the laundry service. It cost extra, the price wasn’t mentioned in advance, and it was unreasonably high, even by European standards. At these room rates, I expected it to be included. Otherwise, we had a great stay at this classic, well-preserved lodge tucked in the woods by a game reserve. Getting there on the typically African road was an experience in itself, with several South African animals along the way. The spacious rooms had a style that really suited the Swaziland experience, and we were welcomed by fun, friendly staff. Breakfast was very good, with lots of choice and a forest view that stretches to a city in the distance. Monkeys played in the trees near the lodge on both mornings we were lucky enough to see them. Dinner was a braai around the campfire, shared with the other guests, and the food was good. The drinks selection is very limited, just whiskey and wines, but you can bring your own for a small fee. There are also activities at another nearby camp, which we highly recommend.
The gardens are lush and full of wildlife. We spotted Red and Blue Duikers, Steinbuck, and turtles while wandering around, and could have spent hours watching the birds at the feeders. Breakfast on the porch overlooking the valley was a lovely start to the day. After a forest and plains walk, we had lunch at the park’s main camp. Dinner was either outside by the fire or in the dining room when the weather turned, with great home-cooked food and plenty of choices. Lizzy and Kani were just as lovely as we remembered, professional and personal. This was our second stay at Reilly’s Rock Hilltop Lodge, and it’s still as magical as before. The old-world charm makes it easy to relax, and the rooms, sheets, and towels were lovely, crisp, and soft. We’ll definitely be back.
The location is great for walks, and the service is excellent. Rooms are old, but have plenty of charm. Dinner is served around a campfire, while breakfast is basic. Google Maps directs you through the suburbs, but that road ends in a dead end.
