The Chiang Mai Orchid Hotel has a real sense of character and history. I've rarely seen such spacious rooms, and they feel quiet, solid and comfortable, almost like home. The traditional Northern Thai design is striking, especially the carved details and tall teak-wood lobby. It's a very different feel from newer glass-and-steel hotels. The location works well, between the Old City and Nimman. Temples and rooftop bars are both within easy reach, and the hotel feels like a peaceful retreat after a day out. Many staff have been with the Orchid family for years, and their warm, intuitive service feels like being welcomed by old friends. The pool is a large, clear blue escape from the heat. Breakfast is a big spread with local and international choices, and the view of mist rolling off Doi Suthep is special. For people who value heritage, space and a strong sense of place, this is the city's undisputed king. If there were a six-star rating for Old World Thai charm, the Orchid would deserve it.

I checked out an hour after arriving, even though the reception staff were nice when I checked in. I had booked room 426 through Agoda. The air conditioners were very loud but never cooled the room, which was warmer than outside. The window looked onto an abandoned building beside the hotel, and the place felt creepy. After traveling from Pai, I wanted to rest, but couldn't imagine sleeping there.

Room 710 was in such poor condition that it wasn't worth 2,000 baht a night. The room looked very old and neglected, and cleanliness was a clear problem. The bathroom was especially worn and outdated. Even replacing the toilet seat, which wouldn't cost much, hadn't been done. The windows were so dirty it was almost impossible to see outside.

It did the job as a place to stay, but I wouldn't recommend it for a relaxing, quality visit. The hotel feels dated and hasn't been updated recently, and I often saw stains on the walls, counters and rugs.
