The owners are lovely and know a lot, and there’s a nice outdoor seating area with tea and coffee available all day. An honesty fridge has beer and soft drinks until 11pm. This is a very cheap, basic backpacker hostel: my bed was clean and comfortable, but the room wasn’t very clean and badly needed painting. Our towels weren’t changed during the 5 days we stayed, though maybe we were meant to ask.

The beds made for a miserable 5 nights for both my husband and me. We could feel the springs all over, and neither of us slept well. The place was about as clean as you’d expect from a hostel or low-budget motel. Noise at night didn’t bother us with the AC on, even though we live in a busy city like Cairo. The location is perfect. If you’re a walk-in, it’s worth finding a way to book online, since that gets you free toast and coffee each morning. The staff did a good job calling tour companies for us. For the airport, though, it’s cheaper to ask a taxi on the main street in front of the hotel. When we come back to Chiang Mai, we’ll stay somewhere else so we can sleep comfortably.

We could walk everywhere from this place in the center of the old town, so we didn’t even rent a scooter. The room was another matter: the sheets had stains, and ours was at the far end of the hallway, away from the router, with weak internet and noise outside. If you’re on a budget and won’t spend much time in your room, it’s a good option.

I paid 300 Baht per night for a double room and stayed at Jungala for 1 night. It’s close to the gate and the sunday night market, and the room was spacious, clean, and looked after by very friendly staff. The mattresses are firm, as some people have said, but at 90kg I found that excellent. I slept very well with the windows open, despite some noise from nearby bars. If you’re used to city life, it probably won’t bother you. Breakfast was good apart from the coffee, which was only instant. Cleanness and location matter most to me, so I was happy with those.

We’ve stayed in a lot of places in thailand, and this was the best. A brand new, clean room for 300 baht, with a homely feel and an owner who was incredibly helpful with everything. There’s a nice, large communal area outside with plants and fans.
