The Old Town setting is the best part for us. Le Charcoa is in a relatively quiet neighborhood, close on foot to the main street, restaurants, the night market and other things you might need. Getting a Grab was easy, and one usually arrived within minutes. We paid a reasonable price, and the rooms were a good size with a nicely done "Lord of the Rings" theme. There’s a tiny shop across from the hotel for snacks, water and fruit. The small bar there (?) got quite loud one evening. We had a bunch of room issues. The bathroom smelled musty and a bit like garlic, and stayed humid after showers because there was no ventilation. We couldn’t open the windows because they had no screens and we didn’t want bugs or mosquitoes inside. Even the fresh towels smelled musty. Black bugs crawled around the wall near the window, and dishes left behind by housekeeping seemed to attract more. We also saw one crawling on the bed. Wi-Fi in room 401 was spotty, with no connection in parts of the room, and we had to enter the login and password every hour. There was enough internet to look things up, so it wasn’t a huge deal, just annoying. We loved the location, but next time we visit Chiang Mai we’d stay somewhere else.

The staff were the one bright spot, really kind and helpful. The room was damp and humid, with a bad smell that seemed to cling to the sheets and pillows too. The fridge and air conditioner were both so noisy that we couldn’t sleep. We really regretted booking here. It seems like many guests have had the same experience or worse, but the hotel still hasn’t changed anything.

The location and kind staff are the only things this place has going for it. The room smelled stuffy, like a basement, and everything felt damp, including the bedding and towels. The air seemed moldy, and I couldn’t sleep with the air conditioning on or off. Unless they renovate the air conditioning system, I don’t think staying here is healthy.

The staff were extremely nice at this beautiful European hotel in the heart of Chang Mai. Ancient temples, spas, restaurants and the Sunday night markets are all close by.

The location is excellent, right in the old town center, and it was super quiet at night. It’s a beautiful building, and having a pool felt like a real luxury. The staff are sweet and accommodating. They speak very little English, though I’m in Thailand and an ignorant monolingual Brit, so I can’t blame them for that. It would be a nice extra if they offered a few nearby food or drink suggestions. We booked a junior suite, but the first room we were given was much smaller than the one shown online. They moved us the next day when a larger one became available, and that was definitely better. The rooms are pretty small otherwise, but decent enough. The hobbit theme is odd, though not a problem. I also don’t understand why a hotel in Northern Thailand serves carbonara and pizza. I didn’t try the food because it was Italian. There were SO MANY Chinese tourists dressed to the nines taking photos around the pool one day. It was really weird and made having a drink with your mrs in the pool awkward while they did a full photoshoot. I couldn’t tell whether they were guests or had just turned up to take pictures. If they weren’t paying guests, I’d urge the hotel to stop it, since it’s not a nice way to relax. Still, it’s a lovely little hotel, decent value, and I’d probably come back.
