R2 Hotel Chiangmai

The price is decent for a solo traveler, but the location isn’t very convenient for getting around on foot. You’ll need to take Grab or drive yourself.

The stay was extremely disappointing for the price. I’ve been to plenty of budget hotels that were much better. The room had lights that didn’t work properly, while some others couldn’t be switched off at night, so sleeping was difficult. Sound insulation was awful too. We could hear bikes, cars and even people flushing toilets. There were no facial tissues or small towels, and when we asked, we were told they weren’t available. When we arrived with several bags, nobody helped us carry them to the room. At checkout we asked for a trolley to be brought up, but staff told us to go downstairs and get it ourselves. If it’s all self-service, you have to wonder what the staff are there for. Check-in and checkout might as well be handled by machines or AI.

The lobby was one of the nicest I’ve been in, with good music and a range of complimentary drinks and snacks. They also had plates and silverware, water refill and, I think, a bucket of ice on every floor each day. A nice extra. With cheap rooms available, it feels like one of the best value places to stay. Two things could be improved. If your room faces the main highway, it can be noisy at night. I was there on a Friday, when everyone seemed to be out on motorcycles. You can also hear the occasional plane because it’s near the airport, but those sounds are brief and not really annoying. Some bathrooms could use a remodel too. There was a lot of caulk that looked dirty and a few spots that didn’t seem clean, which made the tiled showers look unappealing. The toilet, sink and lighting were all great, though. I still recommend it as a budget stay. The rooms are okay, the service is really nice, and it seemed like they worked hard to clean and make the visit pleasant. If you find a cheap deal, it’s worth a stop. The showers are the one thing keeping it from feeling top tier.

We had a good stay at this simple, affordable hotel. The room wasn’t very big, but there’s a supermarket and a 7/11 nearby that you can walk to.
