Koh Mook The Sun Great Resort

The rooms were spacious and clean, if very basic, and the beds and mattresses were comfortable. Air conditioning worked well, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Those were the good parts of our stay at The Sun Great Resort. The surroundings were muddy near the paths and bungalows as well as by the mangrove, and there was an unpleasant smell. The grounds felt neglected, with rubbish scattered in places, and the resort lacked charm. Breakfast was another letdown: it was cold, including the eggs and bacon, even at 7 am, as though it may have been prepared the day before. Food quality overall was average. The pool loungers were hard wooden seats without cushions, so relaxing there was uncomfortable. Even basic beach restaurants in Charlie Beach provide cushions, which made this seem like an easy improvement. We travel widely and rarely leave negative reviews, but the stay was disappointing enough that we wanted to help others make an informed choice. We paid nearly $75 USD a night. We might understand some of these issues at a $30 hotel, but at that price it felt significantly overpriced compared with other places on Koh Mook and across Southeast Asia. We explored the island extensively because we didn’t feel like spending much time at the hotel, and the island itself is very nice and pleasant, don’t miss it. We hope management addresses the problems, but for now we wouldn’t recommend this resort. There are better value options on the island.

We really liked having a clean, proper room. Our standard double was spacious and cleaned daily, though the patio didn’t have a great view. The resort was quiet and peaceful, with a nice pool, and the staff were helpful. The beach here wasn’t nice, which is important to know. The restaurant cook was really good at the time, and we had great green curry chicken. Laundry was quick. Charlie Beach is within walking distance, but renting a scooter is handy for getting around the island.

We come back to Koh Mook regularly because we have family here, and with the island almost fully booked we were lucky to get a last-minute room for five nights. This resort sits in a secluded natural spot with lots of birds and a lovely sunrise view. The pool was lovely, and breakfast was convenient and tasty. Our room was extremely spacious and private, with a deck looking out over nature. It’s in the mangroves, and getting there involves a short walk or a motorbike ride along a dirt track. The staff were lovely and helpful. Challee Beach is very close, and the village and restaurants are about 2 km away. Recommended!

The room was spacious, and the pool was amazing for swimming. We only stayed one night, but could easily have spent longer on this lovely island. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The location is a little farther out, but that wasn’t a problem. They rent scooters and can arrange a tuktuk if you need one. We walked from the pier in about 25 minutes, if you’re up for the exercise. Some improvements are underway, which was good to see. Highly recommended!
