The location deserves five stars: it’s a short walk to the best beach, and the opposite Island has great Snorkling and calmer water. The place is very rustic and cheap compared with the resorts. The huts are basic but tolerable, though they could use a chair and table. Don’t look at the mattress! Mr Chiou’s wife made pretty good food, and there are two kayaks you can use for free. Bring your own snorkel. There are lots of animals in cages, and you wash with ground water. The birds are incredible and the Cicadas sound amazing. Thanks Mr Chiou, it’s been fab!

We visited three years ago, and the calm natural surroundings and beaches made it one of the most amazing places in all of Thailand. Mr Choui is a fantastic host. I hope it stays this way, and that we get to visit again.

Look for Mr. Chuoi's wherever you are on Koh Phra Thong. It’s a homey bar-hut along a little track, about 300 yards from the beach, though finding the way there isn’t immediately obvious. The atmosphere is laid back, with chickens, lizards and cats wandering around. The food is fresh and tasty, and the cooking class was one of the highlights of our trip.
