The Retreat Koh Chang

The ocean terrace setting felt straight out of a movie, and we enjoyed the daily activities, spa, and poolside service. There are several restaurants nearby, just a short walk or a complimentary golf cart ride away. We stayed five days with my girlfriend and had a wonderful time. The room was spotless, beautifully designed, and had amazing views. Service was great, too, with every staff member helpful and lovely to talk with. The only trouble was that once we arrived, we didn’t want to leave, so we didn’t see as much of Koh Chang.

Breakfast was a highlight: you can order whatever you like from the menu once a day, from smoothies and juices to Western or Asian dishes and lighter options. It’s served in a dining area with fantastic ocean views. I also appreciated the small touches, like being met with umbrellas after returning from a dive in the rain. I spent five amazing days here and was impressed by the thoughtful service and the design of the room, furniture, and resort. The rooms are modern and exceptionally clean. For me, The Retreat Koh Chang is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at.

The food was top-notch at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a really unique idea. Kai Bae Beach is a great base, with some of the island’s best restaurants and bars within walking distance. The hotel doesn’t have direct beach access, but the shuttle takes guests to The Chill or nearby Kai Bae Beach and back. That wasn’t a problem for us at all. The Retreat in Koh Chang is among the very best hotels we’ve experienced. The staff were exceptionally polite, friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The resort is only two years old, and it shows. We’ve rarely felt so comfortable and welcome, and we’ll definitely return.

The coffee was the best we’ve had in Thailand, and the all-day breakfast was ideal since we don’t like having to get up and eat before a deadline. It really added to the relaxed feeling. We also got a small free plate of fruit brought to us every day, a thoughtful touch. We just left after six nights at The Retreat, travelling as two adults and two older teenage girls. The hotel isn’t huge, but it’s lovely and incredibly relaxing, with top-notch build quality, design, and styling. The food was excellent, and all the staff were much friendlier than anywhere else we’ve stayed. Watching Home Alone outside in the dark was fun, too. It isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for.
