Top Resort

The price was great for what you get, especially as a solo traveler. The room was clean and had a nice big fridge. The pool was clean too, and had a decent sunset view. I also liked the little gym. The owner can show you pictures of the resort being built out of the jungle, which was interesting history to see. It's a well-cared-for place in a good location, with an easy walk to the beach and a little staircase down to a cove. I went snorkeling there, but watch the tides and be careful getting in and out because of the sharp rocks.

The hillside setting gives you lots of privacy and a great view over the sea, though it also means there's no direct beach access. I didn't miss it. This place feels like it's from another generation, but it's aged well and is well maintained. For a good price, you can get away from the crowds and still have the facilities you need. My room was spacious, clean and cared for. The decor could use an update, but the balcony and view more than made up for the dated interior. I especially liked having a fridge and microwave for a longer stay. Coffee or tea in the room would have been nice, though you can take instant coffee from breakfast back to your room. The resort is small, but breakfast had plenty of Western and local choices, so you can get a taste of Thailand without missing familiar food. The staff were friendly. The resort is beautiful, with a lovely setting and a stunning pool, but the bungalow condition and service didn't match the place's potential. We paid 3,500 baht a night, around 100 euros for four people, for a two-bedroom bungalow and stayed four nights. To me, 2,500 baht would have been a fairer rate. The bungalow was outdated and needed renovation, and the sheets were stained, which isn't acceptable at that price. The German owner was very helpful throughout. The other staff left us feeling like a bother when we asked for a second coffee at breakfast or ordered cocktails. That felt far from the warm hospitality I usually associate with Thailand, the “Land of Smiles.” I took off one star for the high price and another for the service. With some improvements, this could really be a hidden gem.

The resort was very neat and tidy, and I loved the views and pool. Chez Paul's serves great food in huge portions, and even the included breakfast was enormous. After staying in two other places, I really appreciated the quiet of having a standalone room. This was our first hotel on Ko Chang, booked entirely online, so I wasn't quite prepared for the cliff-top location. But what a view. It was the Thailand we came for!
