Good Morning Bungalow

The beach is one of the nicest on the island, with plenty of bars and restaurants. You can watch the sun set over Koh Phi Phi with a cocktail, and see the sunrise from the bungalows. The steps down to the beach are manageable, but if fitness is an issue, walk down the drive and take the path around instead. I originally booked four nights and ended up staying a week. Lod cooked every night, mostly fish her husband had caught that day. Her barracuda green curry and barracuda with garlic pepper were fantastic. Lod and her husband Tuna are such lovely people, and I’d happily come back one day. I rented a scooter from Lod, and she arranged my onward travel. She picked me up when I arrived and took me to the boat when I left. It was fun seeing the monkeys around the place. They keep their distance, sometimes play on the bungalow roof, and go away if you clap. There’s a mosque in the village, but it’s pretty low key and hardly audible over the sea. One of the nicest places I’ve stayed in Thailand. Choc dee khap.

The host was kind and very helpful, and we rented a scooter directly from her without any trouble or deposit. The bungalow was basic for the price, but the bed was comfortable and the room very clean. During a storm, a little water came in through the wall, nothing serious. A monkey also knocked out the electricity once, but she got it fixed after a while.

A lovely, peaceful setting on a hill among jungle and rubber trees, with fireflies sparkling at night and a great quiet beach. The people were friendly and helpful, and spoke good English. They even met my ferry with their own boat.

There are some good things: it’s close to the sea and several restaurants, and the rooms are clean with the basics you’d expect, like towels, a mosquito net, and soap. Each bungalow also has its own hammock out front. The service was basically nonexistent. No room cleaning, the indoor and outdoor bins weren’t emptied, and the landlords never asked whether we needed anything. The place is near a mosque, so if you don’t want to wake at 5 for prayer, that may bother you. My main issue was the landlord. I didn’t find him trustworthy, as several things he promised never happened: WiFi the next day, laundry the next day, and being at the property until 9pm. Worst of all, when we were leaving the island, he tried to charge us for the long tail boat to the ferry. As I understand it, that’s the landlord’s responsibility, and it’s only needed if you don’t have a hotel on Kuh Jum, for example on a day trip. I can’t recommend this place because of the landlord. I was told his attitude had changed over the last few months, but you should feel safe where you stay, not worry that your landlord may scam you.
