Cameron Island Resort

We keep putting off leaving Koh Sukorn. After first staying in a bug AC bungalow near the restaurant, we moved to a smaller AC bungalow up the hill with a sea view. We’ve been here a few weeks and are planning to stay at least one more. The food offering has improved since my review a year ago, rounding out an easygoing, very pleasant stay. The bungalows have hot water, a kettle and a fridge. Rooms and bathrooms are very clean, and staff will clean as often as you ask. Drinking water, tea and coffee are provided free each day. The owners are lovely, and almost daily they bring fruit from the mainland to sell at the market price. Sometimes you can even see the original price tag on the package. The lady owner speaks fluent English and is thoughtful about guests’ needs. Yin, who is Burmese and doesn’t speak English, is still very helpful arranging a motorbike or boat through Google Translate. The garden is kept in great shape, the beach is cleaned daily, and both get regular attention. I can’t recommend this stay enough.

Cameron Island was a great place to switch off and get away from everyday life. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the stay turned out even better than I expected.

There’s a lovely, well-kept park between the bungalows and the sea, and the beach is wide, with chairs and kayaks you can use for free. The location is exceptional. The owners are very helpful and the staff are friendly. The local kitchen has plenty of good options. You can rent motos for 250 baht or bikes for 100 baht, and arrange trips to nearby islands for swimming and snorkeling.

Most of my favorite moments were simply sitting on the beach, watching the ocean and feeling at peace. The sunsets were some of the prettiest I’ve seen, with skies that looked unreal. The beach is calm, dotted with loungers and little crabs. We usually picked the ones in the corner. We also had a great day trip island hopping, with lunch packed for us by the staff. The boat ride was peaceful, and the nearby beaches were beautiful. It was jellyfish season, though, so swimming wasn’t always possible. I did snorkel at the last beach, where the protected coral was gorgeous. We paid around 4000 baht, perhaps a little more or less, because nobody else was available to share the boat. The cost is for the boat, so it gets cheaper when more people join. Another day, the staff arranged a driver to show us around the island. He was full of energy and it was a fun outing. We met other guests who were friendly and interesting, and people here just seem happy. The resort staff were sweet, kind and very helpful. My friend and I hadn’t really planned to stay here, we booked almost by accident and thought we had to go along with it. It ended up being a lucky accident. The island felt welcoming too. We were picked up at the harbour on a scooter with an extended seat, a bit like a tuk, tuk. The quiet ride through the town gave us a look at island life, with locals waving as we passed. We first booked a standard bungalow, then upgraded to a larger one. It was roomier, had a nicer bathroom, and didn’t cost much more, so it felt worth it. We had a twin room, of course. The beach is less than a minute away. Food at the resort needs to be ordered early, and the menu has a set number of dishes. I’m not sure whether they bring it in from somewhere else. I wish there’d been more variety and proper breakfast choices like toast, eggs and tea. Bikes are available to rent for the day for what I think was 100 baht. Avoid riding in the middle of the day if you can. We did, and the heat made it pretty unpleasant. It was an amazing stay.
