The Lake Chalong Resort

Spacious, modern room and a calm atmosphere. The staff are great. I love staying here.

We were left feeling tricked and then forced to stay after asking for a refund. On arrival, we challenged what we believed were fake online reviews and asked the receptionist for all our money back. She didn't deny the reviews, but said cancellation had to go through Booking. We requested a fee waiver and the hotel refused it immediately, despite her saying the owners controlled the decision and wouldn't respond for 48 hours. The manager later admitted the owners were using fake reviews, said it wasn't his fault, and refused to refund us. He even insisted Google Maps was wrong when it showed the old town two hours away, claiming it was only a ten-minute walk. Nobody apologized or tried to make things right. The location is off a main road with little going on. Apart from Wat Chalong, attractions are at least a 20-minute drive away, and without a bike you'd feel stranded. The hotel is run down and under maintenance. It used to be called 'Lake Chalong', a name still shown on Google Maps, and the branding hasn't been changed since its recent purchase. Our room was okay but not clean, with food in the sink and hairs behind the toilet. The lake smelled and looked dirty, and we didn't use the pool. The place felt bleak and uncared for. We asked twice for room cleaning in one day and it still wasn't done, with no apology. Breakfast was the worst part. None of the five choices were vegetarian. My girlfriend was left with plain pancakes, had to buy her own bananas, and staff wouldn't make adjustments. The other breakfasts were small and badly cooked. Booking.com should address places that take advance payment and then, in our view, con people into staying. They also took a 1,000 baht deposit. We kept the room spotless so we could get it back, as we'd seen other reviewers say they weren't so lucky. Save yourself the disappointment and book somewhere else.

Mimi and Rosa deserve a special thank you for their personal attention and hospitality. The whole team made me feel welcome, and the service was excellent. My room was clean and comfortable, and I had an amazing stay. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a fantastic experience.
