Residence Royal Hammamet

We were glad to leave after just one night. Maybe high season is better, but this visit was a real disappointment. The room was dirty, and the kitchenette was dirty too, with no cooking utensils provided. There was no heating, proper blankets, hand soap, or toilet paper. The towels didn't smell clean, and the sheets still had hair from previous guests. Construction at the hotel was noisy, starting early in the morning. It's hard to believe this is supposed to be a 4-star hotel.

The place was super clean, well managed, and had good internet, which worked well for me as a remote worker. Mahdi was a superb host, attentive and professional, with loads of local knowledge. When the temperature dropped below 21 C in November, the heating came on. I'd like to return for another workation.

The suites were spacious, airy, very clean, and air-conditioned, with a cooker, fridge, shower, bath, and beds almost 3 metres square covered in 100%cotton sheets. At about 50 euros a night, it was perfect for us and worth far more than it cost. I can't recommend it enough, and I'm coming back next year. Mehdi, the md at Royal Residence, picked up my 19-year-old son Finbar and me at the airport. On the way, he told us what we needed to know about Hammamet. He was born in Tunisia, speaks perfect English, French, and Italian, and knows an incredible amount about the country. The next day we woke to a lovely, spacious room overlooking a rather large pool, which was the perfect temperature. It was so fresh that even the hotel cat drinks from it. We were welcomed into the family right away by chef Karim, waiter and bar man Malek, and the others. We spent most of our two weeks sitting by the pool, though we also visited the long white beach five times. It's a 10-minute walk away. No sand in your pants by the pool, and food delivered from the excellent restaurant Da Noi a few doors up was spot on in every way. Mehdi drove us to Carthage, a massive Roman spa and leisure centre for the last 2000 years, and the amazing Sidi Bou Said, the astounding horseshoe bay Kelibia, and the Roman Water temple. Along the way he gave us an unimpeachable history of every landmark and conurbation. He advised us on prices, took us to a Hammam, and arranged for a local tailor to copy a prized shirt. We've made a friend for life.
