We got some help from receptionist Fatih, who let us keep the room for a few extra hours on the last day for an extra cost since our flight was at night. That was useful, but it was the only positive point I can mention. We were a group of 11 adults and our baby at Kleopatra Ada Beach in Alanya, Turkey, from September 1-8. After 15 years of staying at all-inclusive hotels, I never expected an experience this disappointing or unprofessional. Our sea-view double room wasn’t ready when we arrived, so we spent the first night in an apartment. The next day, the room was dirty, the old linens and towels were unpleasant, and the bathroom smelled strange. Cleaning often happened very late, sometimes after 5 PM while the baby was sleeping. After a few days, we had to clean ourselves because staff weren’t attending to it. The food was terrible and repetitive, and six of us got food poisoning in the first couple of days. I ended up eating at an outside restaurant at my own expense to avoid going to hospital, despite having paid for all-inclusive. Glasses were missing, and drinks came in thin, cheap disposable plastic cups. Restaurant staff seemed indifferent and unwilling to help, with no smiles. Only one man was kind all week. I can’t recommend this hotel under any circumstances. For a four-star hotel, these services were unprofessional and unsafe, especially for families with children.

The rooms were very clean, and the cleaners were kind and attentive to detail. The staff were nice, though they often got drink orders wrong. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the main tourist area. This place is fine if you only need somewhere to sleep. The pool sits behind the building and gets no sunlight, so you have to leave the hotel to sunbathe. All-inclusive wasn’t worth it for us: breakfast was inedible, and the drinks were flat, like the fizzy ones had been sitting around for days. I’d consider staying room-only, but it wouldn’t suit a longer stay.

Alanya is amazing and I’ll definitely come back, but I’ll choose a different hotel. The free upgrade from a standard sea-view room to a king room was a huge plus when we arrived, though the rest was disappointing. We paid for all-inclusive, but Wi-Fi wasn’t included, and sea-side sunbeds cost an extra 50 euro. The food was horrible and nearly the same at lunch, dinner, and every day. Outside meal hours, even the drinking water machines were switched off. Drink options were limited to a few cheap, no-brand choices. Baklava never appeared. During my one-week stay I spent another 600 euro at other restaurants to get decent food, though nearby places served extremely good quality meals. I found two huge 5-7cm cockroaches. Our shower worked but leaked.

Most of the staff were friendly, polite, and helpful, which was the one bright spot. The bald man with glasses at reception was rude and made inappropriate comments. During meals, staff cleared our table while we were still eating. We both got food poisoning twice, and the repetitive meals plus identical evening entertainment every night made the stay even worse. The beds were rock hard, with springs you could feel, and we woke with back pain after hardly sleeping. We asked for thick blankets to put underneath for four days straight before finally speaking firmly enough to get some. Basic cleanliness and supplies were poor too. There were no trash bags even after several requests, and we were told, “We don’t have any.” The bed linen was changed only after eight days, despite an elevator sign saying it should be changed every three days. There was hardly any toilet paper, which was especially a problem during food poisoning. We expected a relaxing break at a four-star all-inclusive hotel, but it barely deserved two stars at best. It was far from relaxing, and I’d suggest looking elsewhere if you want four-star comfort.

The food poisoning is why I’m writing this. We both had fever, nausea, vomiting, and awful stomach and intestinal pain that lasted all night. We hadn’t eaten or drunk anything outside the hotel. In the morning we got activated charcoal and antispasmodic medicine from a pharmacy. Without that, we might have ended up in hospital. I still have two days left here, but I won’t touch anything from the kitchen and would rather eat in town. It started when we arrived late at night and weren’t offered any food or drink. Staff immediately tried to sell us sunbeds for the whole stay, even though they knew it would rain the next day. On day one I killed a cockroach in our room. The next morning, around 8 a.m., another was sitting on the plates in the dining area, and later I saw cockroaches crawling over plates coming out “fresh” from the kitchen. That evening, rainwater poured through ceiling lights onto the food, and I recorded it. The room was cleaned twice, but they still left the dead cockroach by the entrance. This is by far the worst hotel I’ve stayed at. I’ve traveled across Africa, and even three-star hotels there had higher standards. The people running this place should be fired, and the owner should face legal consequences for endangering guests’ lives and health.
