The massive red brick structure and the striking remains of columns and walls make Kızıl Avlu an impressive place to walk around. It gives you a strong feel for Bergama’s past, and the site is easy to explore with good spots for photos. I found it memorable, especially as someone interested in architecture and archaeology. Some areas could be better preserved, and more information signs would help explain what you’re seeing.

It’s worth a visit, and I’d call it a must-see in Bergama. This Roman-era basilica may be one of the largest I’ve seen. Going into the tower and looking up at the dome makes it even more impressive.

Our tour group stopped here in September for photos, but the entrance fee wasn’t included. It only costs a small amount, so I thought paying to go in and see it close up was worthwhile. You can also get a great view of the ancient temple by walking along the fence outside.

It takes less than an hour to see the site. The historic place is badly preserved, which is a real shame. If you happen to be passing by on a drive from Izmir to Istanbul, you could stop in, but I wouldn’t make a special trip for it.

We came on 5 May 2025, but the entire site was closed for restoration. There were no signs explaining the closure or saying when it might reopen, so I’ve given it two stars. I could take pictures of the buildings outside through gaps in the fencing.
