The terrace view of the hot air balloons was surreal, and the hotel sits in a peaceful, charming village. It's not close to Goreme, but that wasn't a problem for us: you can take a taxi or a public bus that comes every 20 minutes. Still, for what we paid, other hotels can offer the same view with better service. Our experience at Katapa Special Cave Hotel wasn't good. Staff seemed indifferent and the service was poor. Breakfast is included, but it's only served at 9 a.m., which clashes with tours that start then. We stayed two nights and missed it both mornings. On the first day, after an early balloon ride and before a 9 a.m. red tour, we came back and asked for coffee or tea. Staff said no, because nobody was available. The room menu wasn't useful either, since no one was around to take an order. On our last morning, we asked for an earlier breakfast because our airport driver was coming at 8:30 a.m. The staff refused and said breakfast was only at 9.

The accommodation was OK, but I'd avoid this place because of the balloon booking they handled for us. We paid €220 while other people paid only €100, which feels like ripping off tourists and makes the place complicit. The flight was advertised as a guaranteed hour but lasted just 40 minutes. The balloon site was an hour from the hotel each way, so it meant a 4 a.m. start for a 6 a.m. flight. Avoid this place.

The photos make this place look like a fairy tale, but the real thing fell well short. It's in a village in the Avanos area, though the map doesn't make that clear; you'd only know if you already knew the area. Goreme is the real deal, and that's where I'd book. At least the sheets and toilet were clean, and there were no bedbugs. That was about the end of the positives. The cave finish in the room kept flaking and crumbling onto the bed. The rugs were dusty and dirty, and I had to ask staff to shake them out. They seemed generally nonchalant about the place. You can get better in Goreme for what they charge.

The setting and the lovely rooms make Katapa Special Cave hotel feel like a real find in Cavusin. Add the excellent service and I’d happily recommend it to anyone after a memorable, unusual stay.
