Taking a ferry on the Bosphorus was a highlight for me. The water links Europe and Asia, with palaces such as Dolmabahçe and Çırağan along the banks and Rumeli Hisarı watching over the strait. Seagulls circle overhead, and going under the Bosphorus Bridge as its lights come on is quite a sight. You can take a public ferry and be among locals, book a private yacht for a different view of the skyline, or go on a dinner cruise with Turkish music and meze. Having rakı as the city lights up felt special. A sunset cruise sounds just as lovely. Downtown has a lot going on too. Sultanahmet Square is lively, Hagia Sophia's dome and mosaics are striking, and the Blue Mosque's domes and Iznik tiles are hard to miss. The Grand Bazaar is colorful and hectic, with everything from handwoven carpets to Turkish lamps, and the streets smell of freshly baked simit alongside the vendors' calls. Around every corner there seems to be another piece of the city's long history, mixed in with everyday modern life. Istanbul is full of energy and adventure, and it left me wanting to return.

I was in touch with the hotel the whole time, after reception told me two months earlier to cancel my Expedia booking and make a new one. Then, just one day before my flight, they told me there was no room for me. I'm glad I checked before travelling, because this could have turned the trip into a nightmare. I trusted them, and this was the worst service I've ever had.
