My wife and I arrived at Vakko Sumahan with a confirmed reservation, expecting the kind of hospitality that comes with a premium stay. Instead, we left shocked at how little empathy we encountered. Our small Pomeranian sat quietly inside her carrier, made no noise, and never came out. Before we could even order, a staff member told us pets were strictly prohibited under “company policy.” We explained that she was contained and causing no disturbance, but the answer was simply that policy is policy. What upset me most was the lack of compassion or discretion. The rule itself was disappointing, but so was the rigid way it was enforced. Hotels and restaurants across Europe, the United States, and increasingly throughout Türkiye have adapted to responsible pet owners. Vakko Sumahan seems to be moving in the other direction. Luxury is about how guests are treated, with empathy, understanding, and flexibility, as well as nice furniture, views, and designer branding. We didn't feel welcomed at all. For many people, pets are family, not accessories. Being turned away because our quiet, well-behaved dog was in a closed carrier felt cold and unnecessarily hostile. The message seemed clear: rules matter more than people. A tiny dog sitting silently in a bag showed more grace toward the establishment than it showed toward us. Other pet owners should know about this policy before booking. Many hotels and restaurants understand modern hospitality and treat guests with respect and humanity, and we'd gladly support those businesses instead. We forgot our reservation within minutes. We won't forget how we were treated.
