Limonlu Konak

I loved the mansion and Izmir so much that, after leaving for another coastal city, I changed my plans and am going back for another week at Limonlu Konak. Taner, the owner and a former pilot, has spent years buying and restoring ruined buildings in Izmir’s historic center to preserve local heritage. The mansion is part of that neighborhood renewal effort. Its original architecture and careful renovation make it feel like a work of art, filled with high ceilings, hardwood floors, velvet drapes, rugs, paintings, wooden cabinets and closets, and many small objects Taner found, each with its own story. The modern comforts include fast wi-fi, AC, a code entry door, a street security camera, multi-function shower heads, a stovetop, a fridge, and kitchen items for preparing or storing snacks. Behind the house I found hundreds of lemons on a tree. I’d never seen a lemon tree before. The area has a fascinating mix of old and new, with narrow cobbled lanes, busy roads, and people of all ages. Fevzi Paşa boulevard is a minute away on foot, with restaurants, bakeries, cafes, supermarkets, and tasty vegetarian and vegan options. Kemeraltı bazaar is a seven-minute walk. Basmane and Çankaya metro and bus stations are about three minutes away, and the Konak ferry terminal is a 15-minute walk, with boats to places including Karşıyaka bazaar across Izmir. It’s a magnificent building with a delightful host in a vibrant city.

The garden and lemon tree in the shared area were lovely, and the metro was only a two-minute walk away. Our room was spotless and had a kitchenette with everything thoughtfully provided. Limonlu Konak sits right in the heart of Izmir, and the restored mansion is full of history and beautifully designed spaces. We met the owner, Mr. Taner, who was attentive and gave us tips on places to visit. Thanks to them, we had a fulfilling three-day tour and a wonderful time in this historic house.
