Wankou Hotel

We had a great stay at wankou hotel. At just $80sgd, it’s right inside the attraction and only a two-minute walk from places to eat. The owner was friendly and helpful, shared the best routes, and offered a free shuttle from the hotel to the bus stop.

The beds were extremely hard, even by Asian standards, and far too small for Europeans. The walls are also very thin, so you hear a lot of noise from other people, though it thankfully quiets down around 10pm since everyone gets up early. The place was clean and the shower was hot. Booking through Facebook was easy, and paying part of the amount in advance on their website went smoothly. Like the other hotels in Alishan, the quality wasn’t great. If you’re not planning to see the sunset, I’d recommend staying in another village and driving up in the morning. Alishan itself felt quite depressing to me, and the simple restaurants close early.

The woman at the counter gave us a really useful guide to the Alishan park area. I’d give five stars if the bed weren’t so hard, though. I slept terribly because the mattress was way too firm.

The host was informative and helpful, and the rooms were clean. In winter the mattress warms up to keep you cozy.
