8door (Kenting II)

The room matched its description, and I really liked how the design mixes old and modern styles. The owners were genuinely friendly and helpful. It's in a handy spot, with free parking just around the corner. Breakfast was delicious, and the serving was huge.

The room was large and clean, but getting luggage upstairs could be tough since the stairs to the second and third floors are extremely narrow. Breakfast isn't served until 8:30 am. The owner was generally polite, though not especially helpful.

Sasha took over 8door from its founder and is still keeping the place going beautifully. We walked past, liked what we saw, went in and booked. By then the weekend was full, and while Agoda or Booking might show dates as open, people apparently do just show up, fall in love with it and stay. Book early. We got the four-person, two-level suite. Upstairs there's a queen bed in an enclosed room with a door, while downstairs has a Japanese-style double bed on the floor. Everyone gets some privacy, so it works perfectly for two couples. The bed upstairs was super comfortable. There's also one enormous shower that could probably fit all four of you at once. The place has two cats, and breakfast is served in the lounge. I missed it both mornings because of work, but I'm told it was wonderful. Water comes in a refillable bottle, and towels are delivered in vintage rice sacks. Sustainable, with a subtle hipster feel. Werther Original on the counter too. I stop by every time. The original stonework on the stairs remains, with some polishing done during the major renovation three years ago, when they got the lease. The property sits among lots of great places to eat, by a new duck place that's feeding my Hengchun duck obsession and a cute family-run noodle shop. It's kitty-corner from BUT WHO, my favorite cafe in Hengchun, and they're friends with that cafe. But Who and 8door made our stay a delight. We also loved the Button Factory, a huge multi-building conversion into a very chill bar complex, with a cool retro vintage hip hop shop. Four French people came by while we were checking in and asked to look around, then took lots of photos and asked about staying. A Korean couple did the same. Thank you, Sasha, for making our stay so memorable and wonderful, for the great recommendations, and for the high standards you're keeping. 8door. Where else are you gonna go?

I liked the place itself, but the attitude left me disappointed. There was a strong sense of pretentiousness and none of the vibe I was hoping for. I came down from Fang Liao, and the staff attitude there beats this place hands down. With service like this, I'd rather stay in a hotel. I believe the reviews written before mine now.
