Altrove House - Hostel

In Hengchun Old Town, this quirky inn has a relaxing feel, with warm wooden furniture and floors alongside elegant cement paving. The scent of wood follows you through the place, and there are beautiful old lamps and handmade architectural details tucked into the corners. Adorable street cats often stop by, too. Asha's breakfast sets and the lovely shared spaces make it nice to sit down for a meal or coffee. They also serve signature iced Haichao coffee, plus handmade fermented cheese bread and yogurt made with local smallholder farmers for fresh local flavors. The charming, friendly proprietress is a pastry expert, so don't miss the seasonal pastries. Getting around is convenient by bus or through the inn's partner taxi service. A lovely stop during a Kenting stay.

ZitaFang was a comfortable place to stay, and I loved its simple, unpretentious design. The location is tucked away and can be hard to find, but if you make your way along Guangming Road carefully, its character becomes clear. Both owners were kind and friendly, though more reserved than guesthouse hosts who readily offer suggestions for food and activities. The black cat was affectionate and adorable. They no longer provide toiletries or breakfast, despite what some online listings say, so check ZitaFang's Facebook fan page. My only downside was that WiFi only worked in the first-floor common area.

I came across a place called "Freedom Beyond the Seas" by chance while traveling with my own luggage as a backpacker. The name fits, it felt so relaxed and free. I checked that backpacker cabins were available, paid with a tap on my phone, and checked in, which was a pretty unique first for me. Then I got instructions for entering the house, almost like moving through a set of challenges. I'd come back if I get the chance. ^^

I came for one dine-in visit, and the bagel with walnut cheese sauce is my recommendation. The two owners clearly put care into the design and make the handmade dishes with sincerity. It feels like more than a brunch spot, and I'd happily return again and again.
