The owner seems nice and is usually downstairs with his son. The place has a relaxed feel, and it’s close to the train station with a fair number of restaurants nearby. My wife and I had a room to ourselves. It was neat and clean, with air conditioning and comfortable beds. There were two mosquitoes in the room, so they gave us a machine to deal with them.

The owner made us feel welcome and was flexible throughout our stay. The bed was really comfortable, and the bathroom was clean. We only planned to stay one night, but ended up staying three. The towels were very small, and the room had the basics without any extras, so those could be improved.

For a low-budget trip, the price makes this hostel worth considering. We paid about $1520 per person for three nights with five people, which worked out to roughly 500 a night. The hot water seemed to shut off at some point in the evening, which was disappointing after coming back from the bar with friends, so showering before 10 would be a good idea. They don't provide large towels, and the toothpaste was kind of odd, so bring your own towel, toothbrush, and toothpaste.

The owner was very accommodating and did all he could to make our stay pleasant. We were there for the marathon and had to check out early, but he kindly let us come back and shower in the afternoon. Free Wi-Fi, a fridge, and basic amenities were available.

We had a good stay in the private room with three beds, and the hostel was close to Hualien station and fairly inexpensive. Breakfast was rice porridge and toast. The front desk staff didn't speak much English, but I'd still recommend the place.
