Enishi Resort villa

The architecture has a simple beauty, and the service and thoughtful touches made the price feel justified. It's a discreet, high-end place for hip guests with some money to spend, not budget travelers. The industrial-chic inside and blocky, almost jail-like outside make this hidden gem easy to remember. Ask about the VIP room on the third floor. It has access to a rooftop open-air pool and an onsen, so you can stargaze and skinny dip in private if that's what you're after. The bathroom has towels, shampoo, conditioner, the usual necessities, and even a smart bidet. There are fine Japanese kettle sets with ground Taiwanese high-mountain tea leaves, too. Breakfast is complimentary at the second-floor bar, and I believe liquor may be available.

We checked out after one night and found another place. It looked interesting at first, but it was damp and really noisy, with terrible beds. I couldn't sleep at all. Every room opens onto the same corridor, so you hear everything in the building through the night. At 3am I had to go tell people to quiet down. There aren't any shops nearby either. I wouldn't stay here again.

A great spot for a vacation, whether it's short or long. I'll be back!
