1969 Blue Sky Hotel

The mold smell hit us as soon as we checked in, and it filled both the room and hallway. Staff moved us after we reported it, but the replacement room still had mold in the bathroom. We stayed the two nights we'd booked in Taichung, though opening the window didn't get rid of the smell. Stay at your own risk.

The location is great, but the mold made this place unacceptable for us. It was noticeable even in the corridors, and seemed to be covered up with fragrance. We had booked several rooms. Some ceilings looked freshly painted, which hid things at first, but mold was still obvious on the tiles. We checked out right away without staying. The staff were kind and cancelled and refunded all the rooms without question. It was still concerning that this seemed like a known problem.

We arrived before check-in and could leave our luggage, which was handy. The hotel also has a refillable water station and shared lounge, both nice to have. Its industrial-meets-modern style was a cool touch, and we enjoyed staying there. We visited at the end of November. The location put us close to many places we wanted to see, including chun shui tang, a Michelin rated beef noodle spot, miyahara, bakeries, cafes and a mall. The train station was within walking distance, with easy connections to night markets, museums, more food and outdoor spaces. I'd stay again and recommend it to people traveling with children or older parents.

The rooms were spacious, clean and contemporary, and the toilet was great, with a modern Japanese style toilet. I loved this hotel. One small thing is that the room doesn't get fully dark when you turn out the lights. The TV, emergency, corridor, switch and air conditioning lights all stay visible. Those little lights bother me, so I had to cover them. That's just my personal preference, but I wish they'd been more thoughtful when installing them.
