backpackers hostel - Changchun

I got there at 2115 and was charged 100 TWD to check in. The hostel’s number didn’t have WhatsApp, so as an international traveler I was locked out. I had to find an ATM and withdraw cash, which cost me another 6 USD. I was really frustrated. The receptionist lived at the hostel and arrived within a minute of my call. Most hostels can arrange late or self check-in, so charging for this felt like a rip-off. The place itself was pretty grungy and didn’t seem well cared for. I wouldn’t recommend it; there are much nicer options in Taipei.

I slept well throughout my five-day stay, and the lounge WiFi was great. The staff were approachable, friendly and quick to resolve issues. Kenny enjoys small talk, so don’t hesitate to say hi. A great option for solo travelers. Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to return!

The location earned most of the stars for me. The hostel lets school groups stay, and there was a very large one while we were there. With no rules for the kids, some swore at me and ran around loudly late at night. Children were also left unattended in common rooms. Someone took my coffee, which I’d labeled with my room number, from the shared fridge. Our room had ceiling mold and felt very damp. The bathrooms were clean but quite run down. For the price, the hostel wasn’t too bad, but I wish I’d known it would be full of children. Another school group was checking in as we left.

My stay in Taipei was a good one. The only real downside was having to buy a towel instead of being given one. The showers and toilets were great, and there were lots of hairdryers, though they don’t last long. The dorms were nice: just two sets of bunk beds, with space for luggage and jackets. Several bus and tram stations are nearby, though you’ll walk five to ten minutes to reach them. From there you can get just about anywhere directly, without changing transport. There’s also a little space to eat and relax, where you can meet the few tourists in the country or chat with Taiwanese people.
