The Tango Taipei XinYi

The staff were pleasant and the location was fine, but I didn't feel the hotel was worth the price. The rooms are gloomy and worn, with stains on the furniture and walls. I found hair left on the showerhead, dust on the walls, and dust on the curtain separating the room from the bathroom. It looks like it may have been lovely back in 1990, but it badly needs updating.

The room smelled damp and moldy, so my boyfriend paid to upgrade us. The larger room had no smell, but the other problems were still there. Its bathroom had an eroded tile floor and a glass sliding door with a big gap at the bottom, so it didn't block sound. The room corners still looked filthy, though the bed and sheets seemed clean. On the second night we found a dead cockroach in the main hallway. Cleaning staff left it there for two nights, until I wrote a note with an arrow pointing it out. The bathroom outlet didn't work with the hotel's hair dryer, the robes and towels felt stiff and cheap, and our key cards failed about half the time. In four nights we went to the desk at least six times to have them reprogrammed. The bathroom grout was poorly done, some tile was eroding, the baseboards had holes, and the decor was dated and awful. The lobby's heavy perfume and people in suits gave a misleading impression of luxury, especially since the suits looked like cheap polyester. It felt like the hotel started a luxury makeover, ran short of money, then cut corners and hired bad contractors. I'd give the service one star, not the hotel. The staff were doing their best in a lousy place. Do better, and pay them more for what they have to put up with.

The front desk employee was accommodating when I complained about the damp, moldy smell in my first room. He moved me and offered an upgrade, though I'd have had to pay the difference. His service is why I gave the place three stars instead of one or two. The sheets felt very clean, but even after the move, the room didn't seem much cleaner. There was no smell, at least, though I saw a cockroach in the upgraded room. My girlfriend wasn't comfortable walking barefoot and probably wouldn't be as generous as I am 😂

The rooms were large, very clean, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Free drinks and snacks in the minibar were a nice extra. My only downside was that the beds felt a little stiff. All in all, a very good stay.
