We only stayed one night in Taidong, back in July 2015, but the host made the visit memorable. He picked us up at the station, made breakfast, arranged transportation to the hot air balloon festival and other local sights, and suggested some delicious shaved ice for the summer heat. When we left, he drove us back to the station and sent us off with snacks. We still keep in touch and call each other friends. The hostel itself is bright, spacious, clean, and full of character. There are four rooms, if I remember correctly, enough for a decent sized group. You can tell the host takes pride in looking after the place. Taidong feels like a hidden gem in Taiwan, and this hostel does too. You won't be disappointed!

The rooms are clean and the shower is great, though they aren't very spacious. It's very close to the taitung train station and downtown, which makes getting around easy.

The wooden stair flooring was a nice touch. Handy if you just need a night near the train station. A ride into the city center costs 250ntd.

We had a four-person room for one night. It was spacious enough for three adults and a child, and the soundproofing was acceptable. The beds and bedding were comfortable, and the whole room was very clean. It had a TV, air conditioning, and a fan. The bathroom was tidy, the sliding door separated wet and dry areas, and the towels were very comfortable. It's about a 10-minute walk from the train station. We drove and found the parking lot convenient, and there are U-bike rental stations nearby. Shared areas have a water dispenser and kitchen utensils. Entry and exit use a contactless key card. There is no breakfast, and the Wi-Fi kept dropping, with an unstable signal. Still, the clean facilities, easy parking, and convenient transport made the stay good value at less than NT$2000 a night for a four-person room. I'd stay here again if I get the chance to visit Taitung.
