Makuti Beach Bungalows

Step out of the room and you’re already on the beach. With just over a dozen rooms, the place feels almost like a private beach. It’s charming, quiet and relaxing, with a lovely ocean view, especially at sunrise. The staff are very nice and helpful. Breakfast was very good, with fresh fruit and juice every day. The rooms are clean, with a rustic Zanzibar style and comfortable big beds. At low tide you can walk to the coral reef in about 30 minutes. Paje, with its restaurants and market, is a 20-30 minute walk away.

The staff are the best part, they really want to help if you need anything. It’s a relaxed place right by the beach, with sand everywhere so shoes aren’t needed. The room is big, though the AC doesn’t run at full power, and there’s a fan over the bed. Bring your own soap. WiFi is only available in the restaurant, and when it’s busy it works poorly. Paje is a 25-minute walk away. The beach is very shallow and can be busy. A good spot to relax.

The food was a real highlight, with varied breakfasts and lovely beachfront meals featuring fresh seafood. My bungalow was spacious, clean and nicely decorated, mixing traditional Zanzibar style with a tropical feel. The staff were wonderful, always smiling and sharing helpful tips for exploring Zanzibar. Makuti Bungalows sits on Bwejuu Beach, with sandy beach access and bungalows surrounded by lush gardens. It felt like a tropical dream from the moment I arrived. There were a few minor challenges with WiFi and changing tides, but it’s a peaceful escape with warm service and authentic Zanzibari charm. I’d happily recommend it and hope to return. I’m four nights into a seven-night stay at Makuti Beach Bungalows, and I’m enjoying it enough to write before I leave. The staff are friendly, sociable and welcoming. Prices feel fair, and the food is as good as anywhere else. Try the “Catch of the Day”, you won’t regret it. The hotel has a relaxed, familiar feel, maybe a little bohemian, though that seems common at the places I’ve visited in Zanzibar. Along this southeast coast, choosing where to stay also means choosing how busy you want the beach to be. I wanted somewhere away from crowds where I could relax, and I’m very happy with that choice. Highly recommend it!
